May 2017 Legislative Update

Greetings WS&DSA members,

You will find a tracking report on legislative issues prepared by our Lobbyists, The Hamilton Consulting Group. This is the latest that the legislative committee, along with the BSSA legislative committee, has been working on or watching as the legislation passes through the capitol.

On Tuesday May 30, Sheriff Podoll, Sheriff Gossage, Sheriff Picknell, and I were in Madison and testified in front of the Senate Committee on Labor and Regulatory Reform in reference to the Asset Forfeiture bill. The WI Chiefs of Police Association also had representatives to testify against the bill. No action was taken on this however, the door was left open for further talks between the authors of the bill and the various law enforcement groups.

Earlier this month, Sheriff Podoll, Caty, and I met with Representative Billings and Senator Harsdorf’s staff on the AB 186. Under this bill, a person who is under the age of 18 may not be prosecuted for┬ácommitting an act of prostitution. Sheriff Podoll and I shared our concerns on a couple of aspects of this bill and hopefully these can be addressed by the authors.

It has slowed down a little at the Capitol as the legislators are busy trying to work out the budget however, I believe once that is behind them, it will start to pick up with some of the bills we are tracking for the association which will include the Protective Status, Asset Forfeiture, WRS changes, Survivor’s Benefits and others.

Here is the link to the tracking report and you will be able to click on various bills we are tracking to see exactly what is in them and where they stand: http://www.hamilton-consulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/BSSA.WSDS-Tracking-Report-May-26-2017.pdf

I hope everybody had a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend and I will post more information on this page when it becomes available.

Stay safe all.
